So, what else have you been printing, Larry?

The past month has involved two types of 3D printing projects:

    - Printing Grateful Dead license plate frames and coasters for my wife to give to friends, and

    - Printing parts for my grandson's Brio train.

My 2 year-old grandson is infatuated with trains, and I'm hoping this will soon lead to him getting interested in building rockets with Papa in a few years.  We were given a nice, "gently used" train set after our neighbor's children outgrew it but I saw some designs online I wanted to build to customize the layout for my grandson.

First, I found a cute tunnel with the track by a user named alchemic on Thingiverse:


Next, I found a bridge that looks kind of like a miniature Golden Gate Bridge by a user, RICie on Printables.com.  This required several days of printing and a couple of tries to print the curved, ascending track correctly but it turned out nicely and supplements certain pieces of track we didn't have. 



I rearranged the track to incorporate these two new elements (the bridge is in the middle track and the tunnel is just to the left of it in the picture below) and our grandson got to play with the new layout today.


I keep finding more ways to use my 3D printer.  Now it's time to get back to building and launching some of the rockets I've printed recently.

3D printing a rocket no longer produced using OpenRocket

Well, I finally decided to try merging my software skills with my new toy to try to recreate an out-of-production rocket, the 37 inch tall Estes Maxi Brute Honest John  (available 1975-1983; on page 31 of the Estes catalog at  https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0686/0220/0369/files/Estes_1975_Catalog.pdf ).  The nose cone is unique and no longer available, so I decided to try to take advantage of a new feature in OpenRocket version 23.09 that allows the export of parts of a rocket as an .OBJ file, suitable for 3D printing.  The OpenRocket team put together a great tutorial describing the process.   Luckily for me, someone posted a RockSim file for the Maxi Brute Honest John on RocketReviews.com in 2010, and OpenRocket supports the import of RockSim .rkt files so I thought I'd give it a try. New Year, New Toys

Santa was very good to me this year!  I'd given my family a bunch of suggestions to pass on to "Santa" and I ended up getting several of the bigger items.  Among the rocket themed gifts I got this year were a Featherweight GPS Tracker and an Anycubic Kobra Max 3D printer .  I set up the printer in my office: It's big, 17.7" high x 15.7" wide x 15.7" deep, which will allow me to print tall rocket parts (nose cones, etc.).  It took a couple hours to set up, partly because I put the tower on backwards.  After printing the owl test print, I've built a bunch of things so far: - Owl (test print) - Grateful Dead cookie cutter bear - "Whirl & Hurl" spinner flying rocket - Tube cutting guides - Higher resolution Gemini capsule  than the one I got from the library - Bomb rocket parts - Featherweight GPS holder - Dummy Mercury capsule (so the fragile escape tower doesn't break) -  Bulbasaur Planter   Owl test print finishing 12/30 (2 hours...

Looking back on 2024

Well, it's been an exciting year.  In addition to becoming a grandfather and going to half-time at work, I started the year learning to use my new 3D printe r .  I've used the printer to build rockets that are no longer available, learned how to combine my OpenRocket skills to 3D print novel or experimental rockets as well as printing things for my wife's gardening hobby, printing things inspired by her love of the Grateful Dead and printing things for my daughters.  For Halloween, some of our neighbors had rats (we think it's caused by the construction of Northwestern's new football/concert stadium) so we were asked by our Village not to put out real pumpkins.  As a solution, I 3D printed a Grateful Dead-themed Halloween pumpkin: I'm currently printing a (late) Grateful Dead-themed Christmas present for my wife.  This is my first four color 3D print, based upon what I learned printing multicolor coasters for Valentine's Day for my wife.  This involves pri...
